GOP BOOTH AT THE COUNTY FAIR - CAN YOU HELP?

GOP BOOTH AT THE COUNTY FAIR - CAN YOU HELP?
The Middlesex County Republican Organization, on behalf of our county candidates, along with the Middlesex County Republican Women's Club, the Middlesex County YRs and the East Brunswick Republicans, will have a double booth at the Middlesex County Fair, which is being held this year from August 2nd through August 8th, at the fair grounds on Cranbury Road in East Brunswick.  Between 75,000 and 100,000 people typically attend the fair, so it is an excellent place to campaign, selectively register new supportive voters and potentially recruit more volunteers for the GOP.  Other GOP candidates in Middlesex County are invited to campaign out of the booth.

Volunteers are also needed to staff the booth during the fair.  The more activity and the more volunteers the better it will be for our candidates and our party.  In a number of past years, different municipal GOP organizations and GOP clubs have taken the responsibility for staffing the booth for an entire evening/day.  It actually doesn't take that many people to adequately cover an evening or a day and if any local chair or local GOP club would like to cover a day as a project, they should contact Candice Greaux  (848-391-2022 or cgreaux@gmail.com) who is coordinating the booth.  Interested individuals are also definitely invited and encouraged to come and help and, if your local organization or club is not otherwise taking a day/evening, you should call Candice with the day and time you can help at the booth

Come and help the GOP candidates for a couple of hours and then take the opportunity to visit the rest of the fair:  eat some cotton candy, go on a ride, eat a funnel cake, see the animals, have a sausage sandwich, etc.  What is there not to like?
SUMMER PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
In the spirit of the summer reading lists many of us remember from our school days, here are some activities or projects you may want to consider for this summer:

* Committee people or others interested in organizing or strengthening their election districts might want to hold small backyard barbecues and invite their poll clerks and/or other Republicans in their district, who are prospects to help work for the Republican cause in the election district.  Soft sales pitches permitted!

* Update your phone lists. Many of us have older lists of voters with phone numbers we have acquired or looked up at one time or another.  Now, before the fall campaigns heat up - and you might want to call voters - why not get an up to date voter list and look up the phone numbers for those voters for whom you do not yet have phone numbers in your records - or are not correct or on Voter Vault? (This would similarly apply to updating other parts of your voter records.)

* This is also a good time to knock on the doors of houses without registered voters to find unregistered Republicans and register them and, of course, to find out if they need or want a vote by mail ballot.

* Any time is appropriate to knock on doors of the registered Republicans in your district to:  a) find out if there is anyone else in the household who is unregistered (elderly parents coming to live with them, children who have just turned 18, etc.) and register them if they are likely to vote Republican; b) find out if they might help the Republicans in the fall campaign - if in no other way but to agree to have a sign on their lawn or a bumper sticker on their car, (assuming any campaign will have any bumper stickers!); c) find out if they need or want a vote by mail ballot.  (Try hard to pitch “voting by mail” to the registered Republicans who only vote occasionally - this may be a way to get them to vote in a year when they otherwise usually don't.); d) get more information about the voter.  (Perhaps they will give you their unlisted phone number if you ask them in person, etc.)

* Attend the “Town Meetings” or similarly titled events, which may be held by the Democrat elected officials in our area, and ask them hard questions - with hard follow-ups.

* Visit the Middlesex County Fair and while you are there, spend some time helping out at the Republican booth.

*  Find out if there are any street fairs or similar events coming up in your area, either during the summer or this fall, and help your local GOP municipal committee or the appropriate Republican candidates sign up for a booth/table and help work the booth.

* Write and send letters to the editor to the local newspapers supporting our Republican candidates and Governor Christie, or criticizing what the Democrats are doing.  Considering what the Dems are doing, this should be easy.  If you need some ideas, speak to any of our Republican candidates, who virtually all would love to see more letters to the editor printed.
INDEPENDENCE DAY TRIVIA
Since July is the “Birthday Month” of our country, I thought a trivia quiz centered on that fact would be appropriate.  The answers are directly above the calendar.  Enjoy.

INTERNATIONAL MEDIA WEB SITE
At the last meeting of the Middlesex County Republican Women's Club, Charles Wiley spoke on “Bias in the Media, and the White House.”  In connection with his talk, Charlie mentioned a web site, (which included both English language newspapers from throughout the world and English translations of various foreign newspapers), which he used to get unfiltered news from different countries.  I asked him if he could provide us with the web site address and he was good enough to oblige.  The address is:  http://www.thebigproject.co.uk/news/

By the way, it was an excellent program and Charlie is an excellent speaker.  Those of you who did not attend really missed a lot.
$ FOR THE BOY SCOUTS
I recently received a query from someone who, having seen my various articles highlighting popcorn sales and discount coupon book sales to benefit the Boy Scouts, asked for information about making a direct contribution to the local Boy Scout council.  If you are interested and you would like to help, you can send a check, in any amount, payable to the Central New Jersey Council, B.S.A. to their service center located at 2245 US Highway 130, Suite 106, Dayton, New Jersey 08810.  When you send in your contribution, please mention that I suggested you contribute.  Thank you.

March 1st - Common MCRO Nominating Conveniont Questions

MIDDLESEX COUNTY REPUBLICAN ORGANIZATION NOMINATING CONVENTION INFORMATION

I have received a number of questions regarding the details of becoming a voting delegate at the MCRO Convention on March 27th. Any individual who is a registered Republican in Middlesex County by February 25th, who completes a sign up form and submits it with the $10.00 registration fee by the deadline of March 13th, will be allowed to vote. If the person is presently a county committeeperson, and properly signs up, he or she will be assured of a full vote. Additional registered Republicans who sign up may have a full vote, or may only have a partial vote, if the delegate attendance from the particular municipality exceeds the number of delegates slots allocated to that municipality.

You can find a sign up form on the Middlesex County Republican Organization website at: www.middlesexgop.com/convention2010.html. This form, when completed, should be turned in through your municipal chairman by the noted deadline.

As of this writing, there are potential contests for most offices: Congress 6th Congressional District, Congress 12th Congressional District, Freeholder, Sheriff and County Clerk, so come and meet the candidates and help make the decisions as to which candidates will run on the MCRO “organization line” in the June primary.

February 21, 2010 Newsletter/Blog Post - Convention News

CANDIDATE SELECTION DATES AND CONVENTION SIGN UP FORM

This newsletter includes all of the relevant dates applicable to the selection of the county and congressional candidates to be placed on the MCRO “organization line”, culminating in the county nominating convention. You should register for the convention through your local GOP municipal chairman. You can find a sign up form on the Middlesex County Republican Organization website at: www.middlesexgop.com/convention2010.html. This form, when completed, should be turned in through your municipal chairman by the noted deadline.

SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES…

The school board elections are coming up in April. Although the school board races are, of course, non-partisan, I will be happy to mention in my newsletter, the name of any registered Republican who is running and who is also currently active in their local Republican organization, so you may take that fact into consideration, if you wish, when you make your decision. Any candidate, or any local chairman who knows of a candidate or candidates who meet both of these criteria, can send me their names and, time permitting, I will include them. We can start with Dan Kerwin, a former GOP Freeholder candidate, who is running in Old Bridge.

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON QUOTES

In addition to Presidents Reagan, Lincoln, Washington, etc. President William Henry Harrison was also born in February, (February 9, 1773). Although he served less than a month, I found some interesting quotes from President Harrison:

* I contend that the strongest of all governments is that which is most free.

* There is nothing more corrupting, nothing more destructive of the noblest and finest feelings of our nature, than the exercise of unlimited power.

* The people are the best guardians of their own rights and it is the duty of their executive to abstain from interfering in or thwarting the sacred exercise of the lawmaking functions of their government.

* We admit of no government by divine right.... The only legitimate right to govern is an express grant of power from the governed.

TIME TO SIGN UP TO RUN FOR COUNTY COMMITTEE POSITIONS

As many of you know, our GOP municipal committees and county committee is made up of one county committeeman and one county committeewoman in each election district in Middlesex County. These committee people are elected for two-year terms in the primary election this June. Someone must be a registered voter and actual reside in the particular election district to be eligible for the position. If you are interested in running for the position, contact your municipal chairman to see if there is a vacancy and for the details of how to file and run. Nominating petitions must be filed by no later than April 12th.

I will probably run a training session on the job of the county committeeman and committeewoman some time after the primary, so that any new committeeperson - and any current committeeperson - can learn how to do their job better.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT REAGAN - CELEBRATE WITH THE MIDDLESEX COUNTY REPUBLICAN WOMEN

Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, so February is his birthday month. The Middlesex County Republican Women's Club is celebrating President Reagan's birthday at a function on Sunday, February 21st. (If you are interested in celebrating with them - both men and women are invited - see the details in the calendar entry below.) In the meantime, to get you in the mood, here are a few Reagan quotes:

* Double, no triple, our troubles and we'd still be better off than any other people on earth. It is time that we recognized that ours was, in truth, a noble cause.

* Freedom prospers when religion is vibrant and the rule of law under God is acknowledged.

* Going to college offered me the chance to play football for four more years.

* My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes.

* I have left orders to be awakened at any time in case of national emergency - even if I'm in a Cabinet meeting.

The play runs from February 5-28. If you are interested in tickets you can purchase them at www.playhouse22.org. (By the way, our Jamesburg chair is not our only thespian chair. Last year, our Dunellen GOP Chair, Roger Dornbierer was an actor in a production of “12 Angry Men.”)

CORRECTION

In my last newsletter, I stated that our win of 22 local seats in 2009 was the most we had done in any single year since the early 1970s. That was a typo, it should have read: “…since the early 1990s.”

January 24, 2010 Newsletter/Blog Post - Chairman Leo Announces Retirement

LEO ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AS CHAIR AT END OF TERM, THOMPSON ANNOUNCES FOR CHAIR

At the Middlesex County Republican Organization Holliday Party held earlier in the week, MCRO Chair Joseph P. Leo, before a standing room only crowd, announced that he was retiring from the chairmanship at the end of his term in June. Subsequently, Assemblyman Samuel Thompson announced that he was running for the position.

As of June, Joe Leo will have served as chair for 8 years and has served as county chair for longer than all but a handful of the other New Jersey GOP county chairs. Over his time as chair, the Republican share of the vote countywide has increased fairly consistently, culminating, this past election, with Chris Christie carrying Middlesex County and Republicans winning 22 local offices - the most we have done in any single year since the early 1970s. In his announcement, Joe emphasized that he would continue to active in the organization.

Assemblyman Sam Thompson, PhD, previously served as MCRO Chair from 1986 through 1994. During his prior tenure as county chair, we took control of the county freeholder board, elected a county clerk, and elected state senators and assemblymen in almost every legislative district that included any part of Middlesex County.

Having served as Counsel to the MCRO under 4 of the last 5 county chairs since 1981, including under both Joe and Sam, (and having been involved with the county GOP for almost 15 years before that), I would have to say that Joe and Sam have been 2 of the most conscientious, hard working and effective chairmen in the county that I have known. I congratulate Joe for his hard work during his chairmanship and look forward to Sam coming back on board. (Of course, the county committee members will elect the new MCRO chair at the June reorganization convention, but Sam's election is probably, since all 25 municipal chairs are supporting him.)

Good things have been happening for Republicans in Middlesex County and I anticipate more good things to come. Set forth further down in this newsletter is a copy of a press release from Assemblyman Thompson.

PRESIDENTIAL TRIVIA QUIZ (ANSWERS IMMEDIATELY ABOVE THE CALENDAR)

1. Woodrow Wilson's first name is not Woodrow. Woodrow was what he used as a first name, but it was his middle name. What was Wilson's original first name?

2. Another president with the same first and last name initials used his middle name as his first name. What was Calvin Coolidge's actual first name?

3. Upon leaving the White House when his presidential term had ended, as what rank did Dwight Eisenhower request to be addressed?

4. Name the other president who preferred being referred to as general rather than president upon leaving the chief executive position.

5. What U.S. president was born on the 96th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence?

6. Who was Lou Henry Hoover?

7. What future presidential relative was Sarah Jane Fulks?

8. Who was the first U.S. president who had a middle name?

9. Which president had a middle name that was a single letter?

10. How many of the eight U.S. presidents who were born as British subjects can you name? For Bragging Rights, name the first president who was not born a British subject.

(I would like to give credit for these trivia questions - as well as for some of the other trivia questions I have presented to you over the years - to Andy Seamans who calls himself “The Answer Man.” I also recognize that one of the answers in this quiz is found in a subsequent question. Consider that a bonus.)

THOMPSON PRESS RELEASE

What follows is a copy of the press release issued by Assemblyman Sam Thompson a few days ago:

Sam Thompson of Old Bridge announced at the Middlesex County Republican Holiday Party last night that he will seek the return as Middlesex County Republican Chairman this year. At the same function, current Chairman Joe Leo advised the gathering that he will not be seeking re-election. Thompson is an Assemblyman (R., Middlesex, Monmouth) and was previously the County Republican Chairman from 1986-1994.

In making his announcement, Thompson stated: "The Republican Party made great strides in Middlesex County last year. In addition to winning numerous local races, we produced a 42,000 vote swing for Chris Christie in the governor's race, the third largest in the State. With Governor Christies' inauguration and the smashing victory of Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate race, enthusiasm and optimism is nearing an all time high within Republican ranks.

We are faced with our best opportunity in years to break the stranglehold that the Democrats have held on Middlesex County with their one party rule.

The year before last, the voters voted for change in Washington. This past year they voted for change in Trenton Clearly, residents are now ready for a change in Middlesex County.

During my previous tenure as Chairman, we elected our first Republican County Clerk since 1932 and after winning Freeholder elections two years in a row, gained majority membership of the Freeholder Board for the first time since 1932.

I pledge, that as County Chairman, I will work tirelessly to build the strength of our organization, to significantly increase our fundraising to solicit the best possible candidates and to build a Republican organization in Middlesex County capable of winning elections at all levels.

I am very pleased to announce that I have received the endorsement of all 25 municipal chairs in the county. I ask all of our Middlesex County citizens regardless of political affiliation to join me in this effort to bring change to Middlesex County."

MASSACHUSETTS REPUBLICAN US SENATE VICTORY INCLUDED MIDDLESEX COUNTY HELP

Republican Scott Brown's victory for the US Senate seat in Massachusetts included help from some Middlesex County (NJ) Republicans. There may very well have been others who helped, but, for the record, Synnove Bakke (Middlesex County Young Republican State Committeewoman) and her daughter and Claire Rosenthal (an active East Brunswick Republican) along with others from New Jersey, spent the weekend before the election campaigning in Massachusetts for Scott Brown.

For the record, the last Republican Senator elected in Massachusetts was Edward Brooke, in 1972. Senator Brooke was certainly closer to the liberal wing of the Republican Party than the conservative wing of the party. Senator Brooke was only the second African American US Senator in history - both of whom were Republicans.

INTERESTING FACTS

Since it is January, I thought you might like to know that on January 23, 1845, the U.S. Congress decided that all national elections would take place on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. (Further, as someone who has owned a Mac computer for almost 25 years, I would note that today, January 24th, in 1984, the Apple Macintosh computer went on sale for the first time.)

TRIVIA QUIZ ANSWERS

1. Wilson's original first name was Thomas.

2. Coolidge's given name was John Calvin Coolidge.

3. Ike requested congressional return of his five-star general rank in order to be addressed as general.

4. George Washington asked people to call him General Washington rather than President Washington when he left the chief executive slot.

5. Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4th, 1872.

6. Lou Henry Hoover was Herbert Hoover's wife. Henry was her family name.

7. Sarah Jane Fulks was Ronald Reagan's pre-presidential-term wife, actress Jane Wyman. They were divorced almost four decades before he was elected president.

8. John Quincy Adams, our sixth president, was the first chief executive to have a middle name.

9. Harry Truman had a middle name that was only the letter "S." Just in recent years have most mentions of his middle name included a period. It used to be "Harry S Truman," but is now written in almost all mentions as "Harry S. Truman." (Note from Don: I believe the “S” resulted from his parents wanting to recognize two different relatives whose first names both started with an “S.” It would appear that Harry Truman was not the first politician in the family.)

10. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and William Henry Harrison were born British. Martin Van Buren was the first president born as an American citizen.

PRESIDENTIAL NICKNAME TRIVIA QUIZ (PART 3) (ANSWERS IMMEDIATELY ABOVE THE CALENDAR)

(Most of these questions should be easy for anyone who has an interest in presidential history - a few others are a bit less easy.)

1. What famed U.S. president was known as "The Father of Our Country"?

2. "The Great Communicator" was also well-known as "Dutch." Who was this Communicator?

3. "The Rail-Splitter" has countless nicknames, including "The Great Emancipator." Who was this president"?

4. "Old Three Stars" was also often referred to as "Uncle Sam" and several other two-word nicknames. Who was this chief executive?

5. Which president was often noted with such nicknames as "The Trickster" or "Tricky Dick”?

6. Who was "Ike"?

7. A popular nickname labeled one of our early chief executives as "The Father of the Constitution." Name him.

8. Honored as "Rough Rider" or "Bull Moose," who was the president who was so referred to with public pride?

9. "The Father of the Declaration of Independence" had another nickname as "The Sage of Monticello." Name him.

10. "High Tax Harry" was also often cited as "Give 'Em Hell Harry." What was his real name?

ARTICLE: DEMS “FREAKED OUT” OVER CORZINE LOSS IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY

The following is from the Wally Edge 1/12/10 column on the PolitickerNJ.Com website:

“New Jersey Democrats, freaked out over Jon Corzine's losses in Middlesex and Gloucester counties, have made a clear decision to move to the center as they seek to avoid losing middle class white voters from their base vote. That was one of the reasons Democrats were unwilling to pass a same sex marriage law during the lame duck session, and the primary reason they pulled a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates at state schools. John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville), who is viewed as the leading candidate to become Democratic State Chairman, abstained on the tuition proposal when it was considered by the Assembly Appropriations Committee last week. State Sen. Ronald Rice (D-Newark), the sponsor of the legislation, told reporters he pulled the bill when he was told during a closed-door Democratic caucus that he was five votes short of passage.”

MARTIN LUTHER KING AND RICHARD NIXON

During this period around the Martin Luther King's Birthday holiday, I thought you might appreciate some relevant historical facts. (Both Martin Luther King and Richard Nixon were born in January):

Martin Luther King voted for the Republican presidential ticket, Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. King announced his vote during a public meeting in Ghana, where they were attending a presidential inauguration.

While campaigning for re-election in 1956, Vice President Richard Nixon (R-CA) declared: “Most of us will live to see the day when American boys and girls will sit, side by side, at any school - public or private - with no respect paid to the color of skin. Segregation, discrimination and prejudice have no place in America.”

The following year, Vice President Nixon helped defeat the Democrat filibuster against the GOP's 1957 Civil Rights Act.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY ELECTION RESULTS: THE NUMBERS

The final election numbers for each race in Middlesex County can be viewed on the Middlesex County Clerk website at: http://co.middlesex.nj.us/countyclerk/electionsresults.asp.

MCRO CHAIR LEO ELECTION COMMENTS
Below is the text of press release from Middlesex County Republican Chairman Joseph P. Leo outlining the results of election day to major news organizations covering the County.
MIDDLESEX COUNTY REPUBLICAN BASE EXPANDS AGAIN
WOODBRIDGE-Convincing signs of continued growth in Middlesex County's Republican base are revealed in preliminary analysis of the November 3 election statistics, according to County Republican chairman Joseph P. Leo.
Leo summed up the Election Day returns in a report to the county's GOP leadership this week, stressing that final data is forthcoming from county officials.
Republican Chris Christie carried Middlesex County convincingly in his quest for governor and went on to carry the state, ousting incumbent Democrat Gov. Jon Corzine November 3, the first time a Republican has carried the county in a state-wide election in decades, Leo noted.
“The win here was a reflection not only of Christie's strong appeal to voters in Central Jersey but also the intense organizational effort by county and local GOP leaders and candidates.

Victories
“Voters in a majority of the county's towns supported Republican candidates for local office and brought our freeholder candidates closer to victory than in almost 20 years, “ the chairman said. “We'll mark these advances at our annual Holiday party in January and our annual 'Salute the Winners' brunch in March.
“Across the county, voters supported 22 local candidates in 13 municipalities, bringing to a total of 46 the number of Republicans serving in local office, an improvement of over 30 %. These victories triple our record last year (8) and demonstrate a continued expansion of the Republican base in the county. (An early clue to this improvement was found in the April petition filings when Republicans actually filed more candidates than did the Democrats in this predominantly Democrat county.)
“Certain Democrat leaders and media figures have attributed this movement to Christie's coat-tail effects, thereby suggesting our successes are just an anomaly. There is little doubt that Christie's showing had a positive effect on the overall election. But the story in Middlesex County goes much deeper than that.
Campaigns
“GOP victories at these levels reflect an intense organizational effort by those charged with leading these campaigns. The quality of the candidates is suggested by an open nominating convention for which 900 county Republicans registered in March. This exciting event was followed by a period of recruitment, training and education of a record number of local and county volunteer workers.
“The grass roots activity which was thus generated led to an ambitious telephone and door-to-door communications drive giving profile to our state, county and local candidates. We worked from three regional headquarters locations staffed by volunteers.
Our political web site was revitalized, and a periodic newsletter distributed to hundreds of GOP leaders through the office of the State Committeeman. A sign placement program was implemented.
“Mailings and literature drops stressed an anti-corruption, anti-spending and anti-tax message, tapping into the voters' disappointment with the all-Democrat control which we have experienced. An outreach program gave voice to specific special segments of our voter population (Youth, Women, Senior Citizens, veterans, ethnic groups, etc.) In all of this, including Election Day activity, our fine candidates were engaged and productive.
Results
“Although greatly out-funded and out-spent by our opposition, the results were victories in these municipalities:

Cranbury (1)
Dunellen (2)
East Brunswick (1)
Jamesburg (1)
Middlesex Borough (3)
Milltown (2)
Monroe (1)
Old Bridge (3)
Sayreville (2)
South Brunswick (1)
South Plainfield (2)
South River (2)
Woodbridge (1)
“Thanks to the excellent performance of our candidates, municipal leaders and county-level staff, the Republican presence on the scene continues to expand and, thus, improve the quality of government at every level,” the chairman continued.
“We must build on these extraordinary advances.”
